Context
As streaming became mainstream, Deezer looked to differentiate its listening experiences. My challenge: create a new, playful way for users to discover music beyond traditional search and algorithm-driven playlists.
Challenges
How can we turn passive listeners into active explorers? The core challenge was to create a feature that was intuitive, fun, and would break users out of their listening routines—all while being simple to use and seamlessly integrating with the existing app.
Solution
We introduced ‘Deezer Shaker’: a feature allowing users to physically shake their device to receive instant, genre-spanning music recommendations. The interaction was calibrated for both excitement and ease, accompanied by playful animations and sound cues, turning song discovery into a game.
Results
The Deezer Shaker feature saw high engagement rates, with thousands of users trying it in the first month and a measurable increase in cross-genre listening. Press coverage and user feedback highlighted the fresh, delightful approach to music discovery, helping Deezer differentiate itself in a crowded market.
